Become the Early Bird Who Swims at First Light With these Awesome Tips

Do you wake up every morning thinking how great it could be if you could start the day in the pool? Are you frustrated that you can get in only a few laps in the evening after work?

With meetings and personal commitments claiming your time, you might be finding it very hard to set some time aside for a morning dip. Even if you do manage to wake up on time, you may find that you spend a lot of time just getting ready for the pool, instead of spending some time in it.

Now, here’s the good news. Those days of waking up annoyed about not being able to swim in the mornings are soon coming to an end. That’s because we’re giving you our secret tips on how you can set yourself up for a successful swim at first light. By following the tips and techniques we mention here, you’ll be able to wake up all set and ready to get into the pool in less than a half hour and get in a good number of laps to jumpstart your day happy and energised.

5 amazing tips to start a morning swimming routine

  1. Schedule swimming in your next day’s To-Do list

We think the world of planning and scheduling. In fact, we recommend that you maintain some sort of planning tool – be it a simple diary or a bullet journal or a digital planning app. That way, you can make note of your to-do lists for the next day, in advance.

One of the best ways to start a morning swim routine is to actively plan for it and schedule it in your planner. When you write down a goal that you want to achieve the next day, you are more likely to actually achieve it, because it’s right there in front of your eyes. Plus, you give yourself the freedom to plan and schedule other tasks around the swimming.

Let your swim time be set in stone each day, so you adhere to a disciplined routine. Soon you’ll find that it’s easier to plan other tasks, even unanticipated ones because you know when your swim will finish.

  1. Plan your workout (and exercise nutrition) in advance as well

Apart from planning and scheduling your swim, you should also plan what type of workout you intend to do the next day. This will save a few precious minutes in the morning, as you try to figure out what to swim.

These days, you have dedicated apps that can create custom swim workouts for you to follow. You can also find great swim workout routines on our blog.

This planning will also help you identify what type of workout or stretching you need to do the previous night, in order to be more ready for the swim early the next morning. For example, if you plan to do a medley-type workout with different strokes, doing yoga the previous evening can help stretch all major and micro muscles.

Similarly, you can also plan your pre-swim nutrition in advance as well. This is especially important when you are expending too many calories while swimming. You can, for example, cut up and set aside the fruits or vegetables that you make your smoothie out of, the previous night.

  1. Keep your swim gear ready for use the previous day/night

It’s always better if you keep your swimming costume, swim cap, goggles, earbuds, fins and anything else that you typically use during your swim, ready and handy in advance. That way, you don’t waste time looking for your gear the next morning before the swim in your locally installed Fibreglass Pools Mackay pool.

As a best practice, consider drying your gear immediately after your swim in the morning and set it in a dedicated place near the pool. We recommend getting a water-proof hamper or a small portable cupboard where you always store all your gear.

It also helps to have two or more swimming costumes, so you have something dry you can use the next day and you don’t wait around for your clothes to dry enough.

  1. Motivate yourself to make early morning swims more rewarding

Even when all the planning, scheduling and prep work is complete, you may not be able to commit to your morning swim routine, if you lack motivation. There is a way to address this problem. You’ll need to find both external and internal motivators that can make a morning swim worth your time each day.

Your external motivator can be, for example, the type of breakfast you have earned for yourself after the workout. Or, fitting into that pair of jeans that’s just a tad small.

Your internal motivator can be, for example, the happiness you experience for never having missed a single day of swimming for a week. Or, swimming in the morning because it helps you feel happy and on top of your game at work, for the rest of the day.

  1. Sleep early every night

Ultimately, a morning swim routine can be a great success, only when you have the energy to wake up on time every morning. So, it’s very important to go to bed earlier than you normally do. Even a half hour of extra sleep can make all the difference in the world.

To help fall asleep at an earlier time, consider implementing the following tips –

  • Don’t sleep in the afternoon for more than a 15-20 minute power nap.
  • Listen to ambient music or nature sounds or white noise when in bed.
  • Read or listen to a book before sleeping – it slows down your heart and reduces stress.
  • Drink warm milk. Add turmeric or saffron to it, for a more cathartic experience.
  • Don’t close all the curtains in your room. Keep the curtains open a bit, so you can see the morning rays and know when to wake up.
  • Wind down each night with a set routine – such as brushing, combing, moisturising, face rolling etc. It relaxes your body and gets you ready for good sleep.
