What To Do If Your Air Conditioner Blows Out Warm Air

If your AC is blowing warm air, the problem could be as simple as a faulty thermostat or something more complex. Let’s look at some of the most common AC problems and how to fix them. A thermostat is set to regulate your air conditioner’s temperature to whatever’s put on your furnace / central air unit in the winter. Over time though, weather conditions can render your thermostat less and less valid or even obsolete altogether. And if you’re not careful about what settings are set on your thermostat, you may find yourself with a broken or malfunctioning A/C.

What To Do If Your Air Conditioner Blows Out Warm Air

1. Make sure your thermostat is set to cool.

One of the most common reasons you may have warm air blowing out is if you have your thermostat set to a heat setting. If you’re in the middle of winter and your air conditioner’s blowing warm air, this would be the first thing to check. If you have a heat setting turned on, a fuse has likely been tripped or a problem with your thermostat itself.

2. Make sure the thermostat is operational and set properly.

You can program a thermostat in one of two ways:

Summer / winter temp settings. This setting allows you to automatically set the thermostat to keep the temperature at a certain level. By default, most thermostats will have summer and winter settings.
Heating & cooling setting. This setting allows you to program the thermostat to only control your air conditioning for specific times of day and what temperature it is set at during those periods.

3. Check your cooling coils.

If you have a central cooling system and can access the outside of the house, check to ensure there aren’t any leaves or other debris caught in the coils. These can cause damage and serious warm air from your AC once they become stuck in the system.

4. Call an HVAC specialist to have your unit serviced for leaks.

Leaking coolant lines can leave a system vulnerable to warm air issues if it isn’t working correctly. If you have a system that doesn’t seem to be losing coolant, make sure to have it serviced by an HVAC specialist as soon as possible.

5. Install new or better insulation in your attic.

Airblown out of the vents will be warmer because of the lack of insulation and thus more efficient for your furnace or central air unit to work with. The more air you have blowing out of your vents, the easier it is for your AC to cool.

6. Check the power supply.

If there has been a power surge or other power issue that has caused the unit to need servicing, that may result in warm air from your AC unit. Have a qualified technician check out your system and ensure that everything runs smoothly before getting warm air from your AC again.

You should find a solution to your problem and prevent having cold air again. It involves carrying out an AC repair, checking for loose connections, or ensuring that your equipment is not malfunctioning.
